Develop your artistic side and enjoy meeting new folks this summer. RiverArts is offering a variety of classes this July and August. Registrations are rolling and classes have begun to fill so register today!
RiverArts Clay Studio is offering eight classes this summer. “The Art of Talavera” taught by Fredy Granillo begins July 6. Talvera is a decorative pottery tradition found primarily in Italy, the Iberian Peninsula, and Mexico. This class is open to all experience levels. Starting July 13 Granillo will teach “Sculpture in Clay;” a workshop which broadens creative possibilities through the use of textures, deformations, incisions, and the combinations of pieces.
Doug Sassi will guide those entering ninth to twelfth grade in “High School Handbuilding” from July 13-17. Students will learn a variety of hand building techniques starting with pinch pots. The “High School Beginning Pottery Wheel” class will be held from July 27-31. Mr. Sassi will also teach “Handbuilding for Beginning and Continuing Students” from July 20-24 and “Beginning/Continuing Pottery Wheel” August 3-7.Well known in Kent County as “THE Potter”, Doug has 27 years of experience teaching high school ceramics and 50 years of experience as a potter!
Lolli Sherry began her love affair with pottery when she moved to Chestertown 19 years ago. On July 25 she will teach “Colorful Clay Flowers.” Students will make and paint three different ceramic blossoms to be used as garden or indoor ornaments in this all day workshop.
Our final clay class this summer features award-winning sculptor, potter and educator, Marilee Schumann. “Introduction to the Pottery Wheel” is appropriate for beginner and intermediate potters. This class runs from August 6-27.
In addition to our clay classes, we are excited to offer two workshops to develop your photography and painting skills.
Karen Klinedinst is a landscape photographer and graphic designer who creates amazing photos and photo based art with her iPhone. On July 12 she will offer “Introduction to iPhone Photography.” Students will learn camera techniques that are exclusive to iPhone photography.
Splashy color for summer will brighten your walls with Lynn Cummings’s “Wine & Watercolor” class on August 11. Lynn is a watercolor artist and teacher who grew up in Chestertown. All materials are included in the cost and two glasses of wine are on the house!
