Given all we know about the mind-body connection, particularly in relationship with addiction, it seems odd that it has taken so long to combine the highly regarded 12-step program for those recovering from addiction with the ancient technique of yoga. In fact, if you got to Wikipedia today, the words “addiction” nor “recovery” are not even mentioned.
And yet, pioneers in this relatively new field are beginning to develop a significant following in the Western world in integrating the wisdom of Yoga with the tools of 12-Step Recovery program. Very few studies have been conducted on the role of yoga in treating or preventing addiction, but current findings increasingly support yoga and mindfulness as promising complementary therapies for addictive behaviors.
Leading the charge for this new dual focus in Easton’s Kristi Wed. While her day job is in the field of marine biology with a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, Kristi Shaw has started 12 Step Yoga classes at the Eastern Shore Yoga. In her interview with the Spy, she talks about the connection and process between 12 steps program and the practice of Yoga.
