Thursday, March 19, at 7:30 PM at The MSO continues its concert series, “A Glorious Journey,” at the Easton Church of God 1009 N. Washington St. Maestro Julien Benichou has selected a delightful repertoire and chosen to present the MSO principal cellist in a romantic work to celebrate the start of spring.
Julien Benichou has been thrilling audiences with his innovative programming, graceful and expressive style of conducting, and his spontaneous pre-concert communications here for 10 years. He has attracted growing crowds of music lovers committed to the unique sound of the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. Dedicated orchestra members and soloists radiate the joy of playing under his inspired leadership, none more than Lukasz Szyrner, principal cellist and soloist, described as “an outstanding instrumentalist with brilliant technique and vivid talent” by Stephen Kates, professor at Peabody Conservatory. Born in Poznan, musical capital of Poland, he started playing with the Philharmonic at age 10 and made his solo debut at 14. He studied in Germany and in the U.S. at Peabody and the New England Conservatory.
The concert begins with The Hebrides Overture, “Fingal’s Cave,” an early tone poem by Mendelssohn evoking the stunning beauty of the cave and the sea. It is followed by Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A Minor, the ultimate expression of melancholy ending in rousing victory, featuring the engaging talent of principal cellist Lukasz Szyrner, a favorite with MSO audiences. To conclude the concert, the audience will be treated to a majestic masterpiece, Haydn’s last Symphony No. 104 in D Major. The “London Symphony” fully expresses his humor and is the summation of Haydn’s mature symphonic style.
This concert also features a performance by Patrick Lill, the winner of the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra’s annual Concerto Competition, which was held in Annapolis, MD, 2015. Patrick, a high school junior and clarinetist, received first place winning the opportunity to perform with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. The CYSO also plays under the direction of Maestro Benichou. Patrick will perform the second movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622.
