In December and February, Kent School students coordinated and completed two service projects to benefit members of the Chestertown community. The first project was the creation of a Mitten Tree and was led by Sarah Bowyer, seventh-grade student and treasurer of Kent School’s Student Government Association. Students were urged to bring in new or gently used winter apparel. In all, the students collected over 250 items including boots, gloves, hats, lightweight and winter jackets.
The items were donated to the Deep Roots at Clairvaux Farms, an organization that works with children who are disconnected through homelessness or other similar marginalization.
The second project was in support of The Backpack Program and in conjunction with The Peoples Bank Chester Gras celebration. The Backpack Program supports children in need in our local school system. The Student Government Association coordinated a school-wide food drive and collected items suitable for The Backpack Program. The SGA presented the donations as part of the Chester Gras Parade. They successfully filled three wagonloads of much-needed food items.
Chris Gorycki, Kent School’s headmaster said, “I am always proud of our students but never more proud than when they engage in actions and ideas that serve our community in a meaningful way. Service projects like these bring to life Kent School’s four pillars of integrity, respect, responsibility and friendship. It is gratifying to witness our students’ willingness to act.”
