We would like to salute Jiordan Carter, Devon Miller, and Gary Sorrell, for becoming the first African American youth to pass the American Red Cross Lifeguard course at Washington College in Chestertown in 2014.
This was not an easy accomplishment. After four months of hard work, they were able to swim 12 continuous laps and dive from the surface to the bottom of the deep end of the pool to retrieve a 10-pound weight and qualify for the rigorous course. All of them worked very hard to achieve their dream. We would like to say to all youth: “Keep striving to become all you can be.”
Thanks to Melinda Bookwalter, Connie Schroth, Kimberly Lessard, Charles Lerner, Amanda Kramer, Stuart Elsberg and everyone else who helped and supported the children. We give special thanks to Margie Elsberg for selecting and working with our children.
The parents of Jiordan, Devon and Gary,
