Netflix, the provider of on-demand Internet streaming media and a DVD distribution service, is for the first time becoming its own cable channel in a limited number of markets. One of those markets will be some areas of Kent County where Atlantic Broadband offers service. This service is reported to have become available yesterday, April 28.
According to Bring Fung, reporting for the Washington Post, Netflix reached an agreement with three relatively small cable companies to make its streaming video service available as its own cable channel, of which Atlantic Broadband was one of the partners.
To get the service, customers need to subscribe to both the cable provider and Netflix, and get a TiVo set-top box provided by the cable company.
Consumers were able to access Netflix through their televisions before this deal was reached, but would need to purchase a separate set-top box (or some other technology) that had Internet functionality, and use a different remote control to access the Netflix service.
