On July 4th, Jeff Green, who tends the Sassafras River drawbridge between 4 pm and midnight, waited for the boat parade that never really happened. A few boats sported flags, but the days of competition for best decorated vessel seem to be over. Hundreds of boats came to Georgetown Harbor, though, and thousands of spectators enjoyed an especially fine fireworks display.

As we know the boat parade such as it was materialized later than anticipated.
Seems like the fourth at Sassafras is a changeling from a different era.

The parades are not what they used to be but still pleased the changing crowd of spectators. This year the bridge tender was left out of the loop with no way to adjust to contingencies or provide information over the radio to boaters. At the fireworks stage of the events people began parking on the bridge proper. Instead of calling the state police, Jeff left the bridge house an addressed each car personally. Jeff felt police action would disturb the spirit of the celebration. He said that drivers he encountered were mostly respectful to for which he was pleased. I can think of a time when the police did have to deal with nasty drunks but never cars parked on the bridge. Seems like this should not happen next year.

Jeff,
Free advice: DO NOT PUSH ANY BUTTONS! Especially stay away from the LAUNCH ALL MISSILES…………..
AND do not use the radio. If you must, make sure all captains know you are a bridge and cannot change course. They will pull rank on you and make you change course. Trust me on this. Did I not give you great advice on our DJJ careers?
Raise for all….lower soon on those who deserve it.
