Lately it has been almost impossible to attend all the First Friday happenings in downtown Chestertown, which is not necessarily a bad thing! This month is no exception, and luckily the sun doesn’t set until after 8. Following is a by no means complete list of gallery openings and other events scheduled for June 1:
Artists’ Gallery: New oils by Bonnie Howell in a show entitled, “The Dawning.” 5 to 8 pm.
Carla Massoni Gallery Now featuring Marc Castelli’s annual one-man exhibition,”Hawkins is at the Door.” 5 to 8 pm. 203 High St.
Chestertown Arts League: 10th Annual Photography Awards Show, “A Moment in Time.” opens on First Friday. 5 to 8 pm. 312 Cannon Street.
The Collection: Grand Opening. Owners Doug Cutter and Susan Kerns offer an eclectic blend of Fine Art, Antiques and Modernism. The gallery will feature paintings by Susan Kerns, rare prints and art glass, ceramics and textiles of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Services include restoration, appraisals as well as hand cleaning and repair of Oriental rugs. 5 to 8 pm. 112 S. Cross Street
Emmanuel Episcopal Church: Renowned organist Ken Cowan performs Bach, Liszt, & others. 7:30 pm. $20 at the door. 101 N. Cross St.
Gallery 317 : This will be the final “First Friday” hosted by artists Stephanie Somers and John Jorgensonin the gallery. There will be plenty of sales, since they will be trying to reduce inventory for moving out. If you cannot make it to “First Friday”, the artists will be around until the end of June. (Stephanie also has a booth at the Chestertown Farmers’ Market every Saturday) 5 to 8 pm. 317 Cannon St.
Garfield Center for the Arts: Bollywood comes to Chestertown ! Learn to dance, Bollywood style, taste Indian foods: Tandoori Chicken, Vegetable Samosas, Mango Lassi and Masala Tea; get painted by a Henna artist; view films and chat with international film maker Preeya Nair. 5 to 8 pm. 208 High St.
Historical Society of Kent County: Pat Patterson, retired Foreign Service Officer and specialist in the Middle East, will discuss events of the last several years, how history has shaped them, and what it means for the future, in a program entitled, America and the Middle East: Past, Present and Future. 4 to 6 pm. Geddes-Piper House, 101 Church Alley.
Kent County Public Library: Join the madding crowd that begins their First Friday stroll at the Kent County Public Library. The June exhibit features a showing of the art of the Tidewater Camera Club and Radcliffe Creek School kindergarten through eighth grade students; including prints, weavings, paintings, and drawings. Exhibit remains up through the month of June. 5 to 8 pm.
