Walter DeWitt Lott, Sr. of Chestertown, MD died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Chester River Hospital Center. He was 93 years old.
He was born on December 4, 1917 in Freehold, New Jersey. He was the son of the late Walter W. Lott and Edna Thompson Lott. He was raised on a farm and continued farming when he moved to Maryland in 1961 and retired from farming in 1978. In Freehold, New Jersey, he served as Town Councilman for many years as well as a Deacon at the Freehold Reformed Church. Mr. Lott was a life member of the Freehold Hook and Ladder Fire Company, the Kennedyville Volunteer Fire Company and a member of the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company where he served as fire police until 2010. In 2010, he was acknowledged the oldest active member of the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company. Mr. Lott was acknowledged at the Maryland State Fireman’s Association for being the eldest of three generations of active family firefighters. He was also a member of Shrewsbury Church and the Chester River Yacht and Country Club where for many years he was known for his ability to shoot his age in a round of golf. Mr. Lott enjoyed participating in MISGA Maryland Interstate Senior Golf Association.
He is survived by his daughters; Nancy Greenwood and husband Jim of Worton, MD, Patricia Lott Hopkins and husband George of Kennedyville, MD, and Kathy Lott Hastings and husband Larry of Chestertown, MD, his sons; W. DeWitt Lott Jr. and wife Eleanor of Towson, MD and Pete Lott and wife Renie of Worton, MD, his brother; George T. Lott and wife Betty, his stepson; Richard Bowen and his step daughter; Diana Bowen, grandchildren; Keith Lott, Meredith Lott, Phillip Lott, Steven Lott, Bryan Greenwood, Eric Hastings, Craig Hastings, Leslie Mitchell, Bradley Hopkins, and Barton Hopkins, his great grandchildren; Madison Mitchell, Tyler Mitchell, Meygan Hastings and Bailee Hastings. He is also survived by a special friend; Lois Smith and her family. He was predeceased by his sister, Marian Lott Walton, his first wife Barbara Helen Smock Lott, who is the mother of his children, in 1988 and his second wife Laurel Elizabeth Lott in 2003.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home Chestertown, MD where relatives and friends may call one hour prior (12-1).
