Opening night for the “Short Attention Span Theatre” is approaching and everyone in town has a treat to look forward to. On Thursday, June 17th the Prince Theatre is holding its 6th annual “10 Minute Play Festival,” a truly unique theatrical group effort that takes place right here in Chestertown.
The shows are developed by a multi-dimensional cast and crew of artists, who volunteer their time and talent in exchange for the fun of the enterprise. These artists include playwrights, two-thirds of whom live locally and have written their own original scripts. Included are local writers Keith Thompson, author of “Damsel & Distress,” as well as author and actress Jen Friedman, who will be performing her own monologue entitled “S Curves.” The nine miniature plays showcase a cast that ranges from ages 16 to 70 years. Each play’s director chose his or her particular script, so it’s definitely a labor of love. Director and actor Jim Dissettte shares his opinion on the summer shorts: “Community theatre is the life blood of the art forms. It’s done by attraction; people see the fun we have, and they want to be involved.”
This group of volunteers has worked hard to put on a great performance and bring to town a night full of fun and laughter, though most are also meant to be thought-provoking too. The 90-minute performances will be worth every penny of the $15 ticket price. In past years, it has sold out before opening night.
Shows are at 8pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, along with a matinee at 2pm on Sunday. Purchase a ticket for any of the Thursday through Saturday performances and get free admission for Sunday’s showing too!
