Tucked behind Subway on High Street extension, the Spy found a gem of a small inner city market. The spotless Ramirez store stocks Latin offerings rare to our neck of the woods. Our top list includes the original coke made with cane sugar not corn syrup in classic 12 oz glass bottles, fresh Tomatillos and perfect “ready to eat” avocados, less packaged and great tasting spices, the best salsa in town with a good collection from Herdez, and the perfect after dinner treat, the rare Cardamono gum. 834 High Street in Chestertown.

Dear Spy, dang! I need to visit. And how about the great little tienda up on north 213 just beyond Walgreen’s? Loads of chiles, quesos, chorizo…and I picked up some much needed cooking ingredients up there. Including a ready-to-use mole paste.
We’re heading into fresh corn season and I’m looking for a seasoned Mexican cook to teach real a group of us real tamales. Anybody know anybody?
Best, [email protected]

I learned how to make real tamales a few years ago. It is a lot of work, but the results are well worth it!

This market is no longer open for business. There is another one, however, on Rte. 213 around 291, in a little strip mall on the left if you’re going out of town.
